Day 6: Magnetic Bookmarks

Magnetic bookmarks are kinder to books than dog-earing pages, and they won't fall out like scraps of paper or an expired driver's license. And they're cute.



These are designed in Photoshop, printed on card-stock, folded, and given little strips of flexible magnet on the insides.



I made three of these little guys, trying out different shapes and techniques.



Next time, I'd like to laminate them and use more powerful magnet strips.

Day 5: Five Haikus (more or less)

Today has been a long day full of working two jobs and commuting all over the Puget Sound, so this was all I could muster.

(Based on personal experiences while at the martial arts school.)

My hands are frozen.
Makes it hard to write haikus.
Need schnappy cocoa.

Keagin is a nut,
Shaking his booty at me.
Four-year-olds are weird.

Making something new
Ev'ry single day is hard.
Dumb resolution.

Diet Coke is good.
Diet Dr Pepper, though...
No comparison.

Roses are reddish,
Zombies are green. This does not
Work as a haiku.

See you tomorrow.
I hope to do better then.
But no promises.

Day 4: Martinis & Olives pattern

For a long time, I've wanted to... Those words will probably start a lot of my posts this year. 

Anyway, for a long time, I've wanted to try my hand at making repeating/tileable patterns. I don't know what for, maybe desktop wallpapers, or custom fabric (check out Spoonflower), or scrapbooking papers, or about any number of things. 

So I found a Photoshop tutorial for making repeating patterns, and since I have to make something new every day, I made a pattern! I decided to make my first pattern about a subject I care very dearly about.

I used a martini image designed by my multi-talented friend Mat and added some little olives of my own making. Then I threw in a ton of dots, because dots make me happy. And there you have it.

It's not as esthetically pleasing as I would like - too busy, and some of the dots ended up lining up oddly, and the edges of the martini glasses got a little wonky - but now I know how to make patterns! I can check that off my Someday I Wanna Learn How To list. 

Day 3: Tiny Shakespeare Papercraft

Today I made a little papercraft William Shakespeare with a template from Toy-a-Day.



He looked a little lonely, so I made an origami box for him to stand on (and keep Yorick's skull in).

Now good ol' Bill can sit on my desk and inspire me throughout this project.

2011: a new year, a new mellenini

For a long time, I've been itching to try out a 365 project - you know, the kind of thing where you do something every day and share it with the world. So I carried on lengthy negotiations with myself and decided on something  vaguely impressive and yet still impressively vague.

I will make something new each day.

Don't know what it will be. It might be a new design to go in my Zazzle store. It might be a freshly invented boozy drink. It might be a crappy little origami pigeon if I'm not feeling so inspired. But it will be something. And by the end of the year, I will have created 365 things and maybe even a feeling of accomplishment. Or I might just have a house full of crappy little origami critters. But either way, I'll have the 365 project out of my system.

So if you'd like to follow along and bask in my stress and glory, I'd love to have you along.
